VoiceBox Technologies Receives Patent for its core Conversational Voice Search Technology

LAS VEGAS — Jan. 7, 2009 — VoiceBox® Technologies Inc., the award winning innovator of Conversational Voice Search applications, today announced that it has received a US Patent for its core technology: Systems and methods for responding to natural language speech utterance.
The patent covers a complete speech-based information query, retrieval, presentation and command environment. The technology maximizes use of context, prior information, domain and subject knowledge, and user specific profile data. This system can be used in various platforms, such as PCs, portable devices including those with network connections and mobile phones. And each platform can share user profile/history data.
The system can access local and networked data and can control devices locally or remotely. It can properly respond to natural language questions and commands to either provide ‘answers’ or control devices. So, in addition to finding an answer to the question, “when is Survivor on TV tonight,” it can also execute actions like, “Record Survivor tonight”.
It also provides a more natural experience in the response and its format. If the response is ambiguous or unclear, the system engages the user for further assistance and also uses probabilistic and fuzzy reasoning.
And to further create a ‘natural’ experience the system may employ ‘personalities’. The system can support multiple users, recognized by either name or voice. Users can use the system to share their own content, information or expertise, by creating their own voice-accessible applications.
VoiceBox has already worked with partners to create voice applications that perform better with background noise. VoiceBox applications don’t ask the user to memorize a fixed set of commands, and minimize the frustrating traipsing through voice menu trees so common in applications using traditional voice recognition technology. In 2008, Pioneer used VoiceBox in its award-winning AVIC in-dash navigation system. And in 2009, Toyota TMS USA recently announced the inclusion of VoiceBox in its new Lexus Enform, as part of the launch of its new proprietary telematics system. A simple version of VoiceBox’s technology was used in the popular iPhone Voice Dialer application.
